Entrepreneurial Success & Your Integrity

October 16, 2024

1:00 PM GMT | 2:00 PM WAT | 4:00 PM EAT

Doing business in developing economies comes with numerous challenges that include scarce finance, poor infrastructure, poor leadership, weak governance and the lack of ethics. It is well known that the infrastructure sector is especially vulnerable to bribery risk. As an example, in many African countries there is the prevailing attitude and expectation that you cannot do business without making facilitation payments. Can this mindset be changed or is it the price of doing business within the environment? It can be expedient, especially for entrepreneurs struggling to get a foothold in the marketplace, to, “go along to get along” while turning a blind eye to the dishonest dealings that typically arise in daily business interactions for desired outcomes. Is there an opportunity to hold onto your values and, instead of it being a handicap, actually leverage it as an asset to accelerate your entrepreneurial successes given these environmental challenges? Igbuan Okaisabor shares insights on this conundrum from his lived experiences as an entrepreneur. He will share some anecdotes as well as established best practices for ensuring a business integrity culture and giving his organization a competitive advantage.

Founder Fundraising

September 11, 2024

1:00 PM GMT | 2:00 PM WAT | 4:00 PM EAT

Fundraising is when you ask for money to support your business from people like family, friends, angel investors, venture partners and others. Entrepreneurs often have to tap unorthodox sources of money to get their new business idea from the conceptual stage to actualization. Each founder at some point realizes they need more money and starts the difficult process of finding funds. However, accepting outside money and bringing in new investors can be complicated and come with responsibilities. Therefore, the founder should carefully think about and research before deciding to go down this path.

Dog Food

August 14, 2024

1:00 PM GMT | 2:00 PM WAT | 4:00 PM EAT

“Will the Dogs eat the Dogfood?” is a slang way that investors ask if a particular product or service will attract paying customers in their respective market. You may ‘feel’ like you have a good idea and even a good product or service, but you should have more than a hunch. You should be able to demonstrate that the dogs actually eat the dog food. This session will explore the many facets and implications of this simple sentence.

There are basic considerations like: Who, exactly, is your target customer? Identifying the specific target audience for your product or service, and how much this customer is willing to pay for you to provide that product or service.

But this session goes much deeper into the supply and demand equation.
· How will you create awareness for your product or service? What resources will you need to drive the customer in your direction?
· How will you bring your product or service to the target customer? What channels are optimal for you put your offering in the hands of the customer?
· How should you price your product? Is there the potential for a recurring revenue model.
· How can you drive repeat business? Getting the target customer to try your product or service once is much easier than creating a repeat customer.
· What alternatives exist in your market that your target customer is considering? How can you create compelling differentiation for your target customer?

These questions (and a few others) form the basis of what investors call a Go-to-Market Strategy. At the end of this session, you should have a set of actions you need to set in motion to further develop the Go-to-Market Strategy for your business. After all, even if your product or service is the best in the world, you don’t have a business until enough customers know about it and are willing to pay for it.

Knowing Oneself: Conversations about strategy

May 15, 2024

Noon WAT | 2:00 PM EAT

The air was thick with anticipation as the entrepreneur sat in their cramped but immaculate home ‘office’, the walls adorned with motivational posters and framed articles about other trailblazers in the field. The sunlight streaming through the window cast a warm glow across the makeshift desk, which was meticulously organized with various Post-it notes and color-coded spreadsheets. The entrepreneur’s mind raced, and thoughts were a whirlwind of ideas, strategies, and potential pitfalls. It was known that the next move would be critical; it could make or break the fledgling venture.
